Plan the engine and gearbox together.

An engine calibration and a transmission calibration control different parts of the driving experience. Send the complete vehicle specification so the proposed work can suit both.

What is a TCU remap?

The transmission control unit manages the supported gearbox's electronic operation. A TCU calibration concerns that controller; an ECU remap concerns engine management. Depending on the vehicle, the discussion may include shift behaviour and how engine torque is coordinated with the transmission.

DSG is one transmission family, rather than a name for every automatic. Model year and badge alone are not enough to confirm the controller or programming support. Include the registration, exact gearbox information if known and any previous engine or gearbox tuning.

Stage 1, Stage 2 and gearbox work answer different questions

Choose the starting brief
WorkStarting pointInformation needed
Stage 1A suitable vehicle with standard or near-standard hardware.Engine, transmission, condition and normal use.
Stage 2 / modified hardwareCalibration discussed against the parts actually fitted.Hardware list, fuel, previous software and supporting checks.
DSG / TCU calibrationA supported transmission controller and an agreed drivability objective.Gearbox specification, service history and engine tuning details.

A stage name is a shorthand for a discussion, not a universal specification. A gearbox remap is not automatically required with every engine tune, and an engine tune does not establish that the TCU can be programmed. Support is confirmed for the individual vehicle.

Describe the everyday behaviour you want reviewed

Tell us how the car is normally used and what feels unsatisfactory. Is the question about an early upshift, a response delay or how the transmission behaves with the current engine calibration? Include which driving mode you use and whether the concern existed before tuning.

If there is slipping, shuddering, a transmission warning or an unresolved fault, describe it separately. Software should not be sold as a substitute for finding a mechanical problem. Service history and previous repairs help the workshop agree what needs checking first.

What your quote should cover

Ask whether the proposed quote covers engine work, transmission work or both, and which checks and testing are included. Published engine-remap starting prices should not be treated as a gearbox quote. Controller access, the vehicle specification and the agreed scope can change the work required.

  • Registration, engine, model year and gearbox.
  • Existing ECU and TCU tuning, if known.
  • Hardware modifications and the fuel used.
  • Service history, symptoms and warning messages.
  • Daily driving, towing or other intended use.

For a wider explanation, see ECU remapping and dyno tuning. Send the brief through Cardiff Remaps enquiries so suitability and the appointment can be confirmed.

Do you support every DSG or automatic gearbox?

No universal support list is claimed here. Give us the vehicle and controller details so the workshop can confirm the available route.

Does changing a torque limit uprate the gearbox hardware?

No. Software does not change the physical specification or condition of the clutches and other transmission components. Those remain part of the tuning discussion.
